    National Swiss Pairs Tournament:

Over Saturday and Sunday and 90 boards and 11 and a quarter hours later the cream rose to the top and the winners declared from a field of 54 pairs, which included 41 grand masters. Our own Jane Lennon and Jan Alabaster headed off David Skipper and Wellingtonian John Davidson by 0.22 VPs for first place. Well done; the placings are available on the club website. Sixth were Jane and John Skipper; Tim Schumacher teamed up with Michael Ware for 7th and Neil Hawkins and Richard Lapthorne were 8th. Best pair with under 350 rating points were Chris Bras and Michael Hume at 20th, and Madge Baker and Joan Hazlehurst at 21st were the best Intermediates. Lyn Mould and Anne Simpson had their moment in the sun occupying Table 1 for three rounds. Special kudos to our Juniors Caroline Caseley and Sam Gurney who finished 41st ahead of grand masters and all the other master types – great effort!! I take on board the comment that best juniors should receive a prize – they need to play for something and be encouraged to enter tournaments.

I wish to record that by all accounts, casual and formal, the event was a great success. The compliments about the food never stopped. Thank you Lizzy, Thea and team. No tournament succeeds without the workhorses in the background. Thank you to the dealing team of Charles and company who put out 630 boards, the office-staff Susan, Peg and Pat Manning. There’s always tidying up to be done at the end, a thankless task, but thank you to those who did, and all the volunteers.

And thank you to the Christchurch members who entered.

    Craig Shannahan
    President
