Julian Cup

History

Laurie Julian was a member of the Christchurch Bridge Club for over
30 years until his death in January 1994.

Laurie was a very keen bridge player and won most of the Senior Grade competitions over the years. He served on the club committee
from 1966 to 1974 and during that period took a keen interest in the
Match Committee. At the time of the move from Cambridge Terrace
to the present site in 1969, Laurie was able to organise the club into
three grades and make the shift as easy as possible for all members.

Laurie was a bridge director and teacher and over the years conducted learners classes in many areas as well as directing at some of the smaller suburban clubs.

In 1968 Laurie gave the Julian Cup to the club to be presented to
the winners of a two-session tournament where a senior or senior reserve player partners a junior or intermediate player. This is one of
our most popular tournaments, regularly attracting over 40 tables to the event and is for Christchurch Club members only.
