This is a common cry from members who haven’t done well. The game is crooked. The points are all the other way. How can I do any good when it is stacked against me?

Well, it may not be that way at all.

The 2021 Tuesday night Club Championship and Restricted pairs ran over 11 nights (we lost one with Covid-19). There were 26 boards each night for a total of 286 boards.

The numbers below show the average number of HCP for each of the directions for the entire event. Looks very average to me. East had a slight edge.

This is a small sample, and no real conclusions can be drawn about bias on an ongoing basis. In other words there is no evidence of bias on the basis of this sample.



Some other points of note:

• Seven hands held zero points
• Seven hands held 1 point
• Eight hands had 20 or more points, with 24 HCP the biggest hand.
